As we all prepare for the next general elections in December,2008,one thing that clicks my mind is the likelihood of a possible alliance of the CPP with either the NPP or the NDC.As much as i am a proud member of the CPP,it will be one of the greatest surprises in the history of Ghana's politics if the CPP's candiddate is able to sweep the pools.Victory for the CPP is possible but we must all be realistic and admit that in this case it looks rare.
It is also clear that none of the two leading parties, thus the NDC and NPP can also boast of commanding the support of the required 50% plus one of the voter population in Ghana. It is quite clear that in spite of all the numerous allegations leveled against the former veep Professor Atta Mills including being Rawlings's puddle and the tagging of Nana Akuffo Addo (or Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo as the NPP die hards serial callers love to call him) as arrogant, each candidate is guaranteed the support of at least 40% of the voting population. This makes the possibility of an alliance of the CPP with one of the major parties at least in a second round inevitable. The question now is considering the past experiences of the CPP and other Nkrumaist parties with these two parties, who is the relatively best partner for the CPP. I chose the word relatively because any student or follower of Ghanaian politics will agree with me that none of the two parties have ever genuinely seek the good of the CPP. However, in the words of the former British Prime Minister: in the absence of the GOOD, we take the WORSE to be the BEST. The NPP are quick to associate themselves with the often"overstressed" achievements of Danquah and Busia and referred to themselves as heirs of the Danquah- Busia Tradition. First and foremost is the leaders of this tradition who betrayed the Osagyefo in the aftermath of the 1948 riots and secondly the positive action declaration of 1950 leading to the imprisonment of the greatest and arguably the only African leader who could command real respect and whose support was lobbied for on the international scene. Secondly,we should all not forget that the same tradition described the 1966 coup which began Ghana's backward journey of economic dependence as inevitable and also the fact the Dr K.A Busia headed the economic team of the National Liberation Council which overthrew the Osagyefo's government which every genuine CPP member owes allegiance to.It is also on record that Dr K.A Busia was a known paid agent of the CIA.Don't forget the Osagyefo referred to them as unrepentant neo-colonial stooges who are ready to surrender the sovereignty of Ghana for economic support. (However,it is on record that irrespective of the willingness of the Busia government to swallow the various World Bank and IMF prescriptions, even the Acheampong government noted for its hard stance against the western creditors could attract western donor support better than Busia). Surprisingly, the NPP government seemed not to have learnt anything from Busia's political romance with the West. We should also bare in mind the same Danquah - Busia tradition was behind the banning of the CPP and its leading activists after the 1966 coup. Most importantly the fact that it was even an offense to display the photo of the man in a country he led to independence as well as any effigy associated with the CPP. Hope we have not forgotten the baning ,dis baning and re baning of Dr K.A Gbedemah in events leading to the 1969 elections just because of his association with our dear party CPP. Fellow comrades, let's not lose sight of the fact that the predecessors of the NPP especially Busia pursued a policy of DIALOGUE with the apartite government of South Africa against the position of the Organization of African Unity which the Osagyefo stood for.More importantly it's these same people who labeled the Osagyefo as overambitious, dictatorial, ocultist and all its parts of speech.Could anyone believe that a cesarean operation was performed on a pregnant woman(CPP sympathizer) by angry UP extremists for openly showing support for the CPP. The NPP and their latter day saints are quick to blame the NDC for the overthrow of the Limann government. However, let's not forget that the same people accused Rawlings of rigging the 1979 general elections in favour of Dr Limann.Furthermore,Victor Owusu leader of the Popular Front Party described the 1981 coup as "long awaited " and even nominated John Kufuor(now President Kufuor )to represent their interest in the PNDC government. The NDC is not any different from the NPP.Clearly,Rawlings had no business interfering in the democratic process started by the Limann government no matter how ineffective the government was perceived to be.The massive looting of shops in the periods following the 1981 coup can never be justified by any thinking human being. The establishment of "kangaroo courts" in the name of citizens vetting committees is clearly undemocratic. The sentencing of past Heads of State and subsequent murder of the High Court Judges and Senior Military Officers are all events the NDC can never run away from no matter how hard they try to.The treatment meted out to Dr Limann as an ex President by the Rawlings' administration is something that every true member or sympathizer of the CPP should not forget. More importantly, the treatment given to the late Kow Arkaah who became vice president after an alliance of the then Nkrumaist party with the NDC should scare any true Nkrumaist when the talk of a possible alliance with the NDC in any election comes up. Don't forget the Akan proverb which literally means one who is bitten by a snake is even scared of a worm. From the above analysis, none of the two major parties is a genuine friend of the CPP. However, it has always been the case that selfish and people with personal ambitions and desires within the CPP have always managed to rise to positions of power and authority within the party only to make comprises with either the NPP or NDC for the attainment of their personal aims. I humbly appeal to the present leaders of the CPP not to forget the history and experiences of the party with these sheep in wolves' clothing and not take any action which is not in consonance with the principles and objectives of the convention. Our current leaders should bare in mind that POSTERITY will judge their actions and inactions. The CPP may not have the numbers to win the up and coming general elections.Nevertheless,if the NPP were prepared to stay in opposition for over thirty years ,why cant the CPP? Long live the struggle, Long live the CPP Long live Ghana. |
